My love of fashion began at an early age. Yeah this may sound like a typical post but I promise you it is not.
One. I hate trends. I’m always out of sync and ahead of the curve. Being a teenager in the age of fuck your feelings, you have to be brave to stand out from the masses. So if you are wondering why GenX is not going quietly into the good night? We made sacrifices. Surpressed inner happiness for pensions and healthcare. So, I am finally picking up right where I left off before government employee. That’s it. The Muse GenX Fashion Secret is revealed. You will see a major shift in fashion trends, reviving and fusing like no other generation. Your looking at crochet fashion on the runway folks! So, enjoy a bit of past with all of the flavor of the future, offered to you in the best of what today has to offer.
Early Hollywood
Movies of the 30’s to the 50’s were magnificent for fashion! The colors, materials, and the accessories are unforgettable and the foundation for what we call fashion today.
The Dark Era
Now the fashion norm includes clothes once reserved for my gym bag. Gym bags are now everyday totes or overnight bags.
I can’t find a DKNY A09 thigh high to save my life. A slip or underarm shield is only appreciated by drag queens, it is indeed dark days for women. I’ll be with the drag queens. What? Don’t hate because they picked up what so many threw down.
Remain Relevant. Bring the Light
Solid at the core, forever evolving, I’ve embraced this new fashion of non fashion, in my own way. The Fashion Benjamin Button.
Today, I’m sitting comfortably in a custom bleached hoodie, reflecting on my own fashion history. As a pageant baby, gowns of silk and lace with heels and gloves are my foundation.
As a Catholic school girl, uniforms and etiquette were hand in hand.
And as a young bureaucrat, the youngest IT Administrator in the City of Oakland’s history, Brooks Brothers suits and monogrammed Tiffany cuff links, governed most of my 20’s and 30’s (excluding night life, which required as little clothing as possible. Thank God, we didn’t have today’s social media then!)
The Freedom of Being Fired
Who knew saving 80 jobs and $250K in one fiscal quarter would lead to a bullshit termination? I didn’t, but it did end up being my freeing grace.
No longer a government employee, the fashion ego (born from my love of theater and history), held on pause for a great paycheck, was free!
But to wear what?
Skull Beanies? Sure!
Nails too long to type? Sure!
My fav cons that are hella old? Sure!
While I still adore dressing up and wearing a high heel in the supermarket, I am also enjoying these things, what are they called.. oh yeah, sneakers. And like the coolest freaking boots, lol. (And yes, I do wear my khaki LevelUP hoodie alot! It’s so freaking soft and comfortable.)
RETURN TO CLOTHING DESIGN:
Closing Grimhead in 2012 was a tough decision. So being able to know design again, is a bit funny.
We transitioned a fashion from beach boardwalks to everyday but there wasn’t social media like there is today.
Maybe one of our customers launched Printful, lol… I will have to go see if I have any photos.
